The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in the North East.
The warning will be in place from 2pm this afternoon and will be until 2am tomorrow morning.
They say that power cuts might also occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
Motorists are also being warned that flash flooding and hailstone showers could occur as a result.
It follows soaring temperatures across the UK – highs of 37 degrees Celsius are forecast in places in the South East – with the top temperature standing at 38.
