Bulldozers are set to move in on a former primary school in Sunderland under new plans submitted to the council.
The Maplewood School site, on Redcar Road, has been empty for several years after a move to a new multi-million-pound building in Ford Estate.
The school cares for primary-aged youngsters with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and was renamed North View Academy on the move off St Luke’s Road.
Council bosses aim to demolish existing buildings including the attached caretaker’s house and garage.
A report states this will be done on economy and health and safety grounds, adding “the buildings have exceeded their useful economic lifespan and are now redundant.”
If approved, the council plan to start the works on Monday, February 4 which are expected to take around eight weeks.
All rubble, concrete and brickwork will be recycled as construction materials with all rubble removed from the site.
A report adds surveys will take place to find out if there will be any impact on bats, nesting birds or protected species.
Planners are expected to make their final decision next week.
