Would-be adopters are being encouraged to take the first steps this week.
It’s National Adoption Awareness Week, as agencies look to urge possible parents to get in touch.
Terry Fitzpatrick is the director of ARC Adoption in Sunderland.
He tells Sun FM what it’s all about:
It’s estimated there are almost three times as many children waiting for adoptive parents as there are adopters.
Research from First4Adoption shows nearly 11-hundred children in England are waiting for new families – but there’s only 400 approved to take them on.
Terry says that’s a similar picture here on Wearside as it is across the country.
Terry also feels that for some it’s too much of a challenge to take on siblings.
Adoption agencies across our region and beyond are urging people to give adoption a thought and if you are one of those who are considering it then terry has this advice.
