“The alliance has to work as we can’t continue to be this bad in this area.”
“It’s just unacceptable and we will all have failed if this continues,” he told the HWP at Sunderland Civic Centre.
The meeting heard the alliance will follow the Government’s Tobacco Control Plan for 2017-2022 focusing on prevention, supporting smokers to quit and tackling smoking rates.
The “Smokefree NHS agenda” would also play its part, with health commissioners and primary and secondary care providers working to allay tobacco addiction.
Chief officer at Sunderland’s CCG, David Gallagher, added:
“We really need to mobilise the city and all our partners to work with this whether it’s in industry or schools.
“If we’re serious about this we will all stand shoulder to shoulder and crack this.”
The alliance aims to reduce Sunderland’s adult smokers to 5% by 2025.
The first action plan from the Sunderland Tobacco Alliance will return to the HWP in future for full approval.
