Your sat nav may be out of date once the new river crossing in Sunderland opens.
Following the Northern Spire’s imminent opening, some of the surrounding roads will be re-classified.
Acting as Highway and Traffic Authority Sunderland City Council, are to change some of the A roads.
A section of the A1231, east of the river crossing, will become the A1290, while Pallion New Road, will change from the B1405 to become the A1231.
A section of the current A1231 (currently forming Queen Alexandra Bridge, including approach roads) would become a ‘B’ class road (number to be allocated by Department for Transport).
A section of the B1405 (currently forming European Way) would become a ‘C’ class road (number to be allocated by Sunderland Council, as Highway Authority).
Woodbine Terrace would become the A1231 and link between other proposed sections of A1231 and the new bridge.
Further re-classifications will be necessary following completion of future stages in the project.
